Newcastle fans to stage mass walkout against Cardiff

Newcastle United’s season has fizzled out, alarmingly, as the Magpies have lost six in a row and all is not well at St. James’ Park.

On Saturday they host Cardiff City who are bottom of the PL standings and need a win to give themselves any chance of staving off relegation.

Whatever the result in Newcastle, expect both teams to be playing in a much emptier stadium than usual at St. James’ for the final 21 minutes. That’s because in the 69th minute — to mark the last time Newcastle won a trophy, the Inter Cities Cup (now Europa League) in 1969 — home fans will walk out of the stadium in a show of strength against current owner Mike Ashley who they believe is taking money out of the club and failing to reinvest in the squad.

The Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust (NUST) is behind the boycott as they have voiced their discontent over Ashley’s ownership for many years and have finally had enough of the businessman’s approach.

All this coincides with Newcastle’s worst losing run since 1986-87, as manager Alan Pardew has come under increased pressure following his ban for head-butting Hull City player David Meyler back in March and his teams subsequent poor form.

Speaking to the BBC, Newcastle fans group spokesman Mark Jensen stated exactly why Magpies supporters are going to this extreme measure to show their solidarity against Ashely.

“It’s the lack of ambition that has driven fans to think there must be some symbolic way to protest,” Jensen said. “It’s a club that’s falling apart.”

In recent games fans have hoisted banners aloft calling for Pardew to be fired and see him as an integral part of the issue with the owner and the board. Newcastle’s fans want a clean sweep of the staff from top to bottom as the empty seats at St. James’ Park will tell its own story on Saturday.

Lets wait and see how many fans boycott the game and unite against their owner.

So give him money by buying tickets and then leave early? Mike Ashley doesn’t care

What would you have them do? The tickets were probably already paid for, and Ashley gets his money regardless. If they stay, it indicates the fans accept this amazing run of mediocrity.

OK, so it’s strictly symbolic. It makes the fans feel better, and it makes the owner look bad all over the world once video hits the Internet. The irony is that they’ll be leaving what may be one of the side’s few wins lately.
