In the wake of Tuesday’s 4-0 shellacking by Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola says it’s up to the club to decide if he’s the right man for the job.
Leading up to and since Tuesday’s result, Guardiola has come under fire from a number of pundits and fans alike who accuse his tiki-taka style of being too slow and outdated. The criticism has raised question marks around Guardiola’s future at the club with the 43-year Spaniard responding that he wants to remain there for a long time.
“The club must decide if the coach is the right one for the club,” Guardiola said.
“I won’t change my opinion about the club and the people who work here after one defeat. I feel like a part of the club and will do my best with my ideas until the last day.
“It’s not important [to have public backing from the club]. There is only one rule in football: to win or to lose. If we don’t win, it doesn’t help me if Kalle [Rummenigge] and Matthias [Sammer] are convinced by me. If we lose, I have the risk. It’s a big club, you always have to win. If it doesn’t happen, maybe the club decides differently.”
Despite being bounced out of the Champions League, Munich have enjoyed an objectively positive season, winning the Club World Cup in December 2013, securing the Bundesliga title in record time after beating Hertha Berlin 3-1 on March 25th, and making it to the DFB-Pokal final set to be played on May 17th against Borussia Dortmund.
