During Newcastle’s game against Cardiff on Saturday, both teams were playing in a much emptier stadium than usual at St. James’ for the final 21 minutes.
In the 69th minute — to mark the last time Newcastle won a trophy, the Inter Cities Cup (now Europa League) in 1969 — a large majority of home walked out of the stadium in a show of strength against current owner Mike Ashley who they believe is taking money out of the club and failing to reinvest in the squad.
The Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust (NUST) was behind the boycott as they have voiced their discontent over Ashley’s ownership for many years and have finally had enough of the businessman’s approach. Another supporters group also walked out in the 60th minute, as the show of solidarity between all of the home fans was incredibly strong.
All this coincides with Newcastle’s worst losing run since 1986-87, as manager Alan Pardew has come under increased pressure following his ban for head-butting Hull City player David Meyler back in March and his teams subsequent poor form.
Watch the vide above to see St. James’ Park empty in the 69th minute as the fans want things to change on the banks of the Tyne.
