Juventus don’t play until Monday night, but they’ve already laid claim to the Serie A title. Their next closest challenger, Roma, fell helplessly at the feet of bottom side Catania, losing 4-1 in Sicily.
That leaves Roma sitting on 85 points, while Juve have already claimed 93. With just two games left for the giallorossi, it no longer matters how Juventus fare, as it’s impossible for Roma to catch them.
This scudetto is the third straight for the Old Lady, the most successful club in Italy. While many fans will claim it is the 32nd title for Juventus, in the official record it counts as the 30th, as the titles won in 2005 and 2006 were stripped in the wake of the calciopoli scandal.
What matters is this: Juventus have more scudetti than any other club in Italy. The Milan clubs, Internazionale and AC Milan, come closest with 18 apiece. No other club is even in the double-digits.
Fans of Italian soccer (Juventini excepted, of course) hope for a closer race next season. Roma will undoubtedly reinforce their squad and continue improving under Rudi Garcia. Smart transfers for Napoli and another season under Rafa Benítez should lift them higher. Both Milan clubs should undergo drastic changes in the offseason, and could find themselves back in the mix.
Meanwhile, fans of the Old Lady will continue to press for more. They last won the Champions League in 1996 and, after failing to make it past the group stages this season, are undoubtedly looking to improve on the European stage.
But for now, they should enjoy their victory parade and the scudetto celebrations, as the side have certainly earned it this season.
