Brazil’s 23-man roster out; Toronto’s Cesar in, Kaka & Ronaldinho out

Who will be repping the gold and blue at Brazil’s home World Cup this summer? The picture’s clear thanks to Luiz Felipe Scolari’s roster release.

Kaka and Ronaldinho are the biggest names to not be on the list, as Scolari has the luxury of leaving off two former World Players of the Year. The team, as usual, is stacked.

Here’s the roster, with Starting XI “help” from the staff of Toronto FC:

Full list:

GOALKEEPERS: Julio Cesar (Toronto FC), Jefferson (Botafogo), Victor (Atlético Mineiro)

DEFENDERS: Dani Alves (Barcelona), Maicon (Roma), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Maxwell (PSG), Thiago Silva (PSG), David Luiz (Chelsea), Dante (Bayern Munich), Henrique (Napoli)

MIDFIEDLERS: Luiz Gustavo (Wolfsburg), Hernanes (Inter Milan), Paulinho (Tottenham), Ramires (Chelsea), Oscar (Chelsea), Fernandinho (Manchester City), Willian (Chelsea)

FORWARDS: Hulk (Zenit), Neymar (Barcelona), Fred (Fluminense), Jô (Atlético Mineiro), Bernard (Shaktar Donetsk)

In my opinion, leaving off the creativity of Lucas Moura and Coutinho is a poor choice. Even if they don’t start, they would be impactful substitutes. Too many defensive minded midfielders. Then again, I’m not a world cup winning manager.

Yeah, Brazil could field 2 squads that would both probably rank top-10 in the World. It’ll be interesting to see what Neymar and Fred can do up front together.
