When Omar Gonzalez subbed off at halftime of the Los Angeles Galaxy’s 1-0 weekend loss to Colorado, USMNT supporters were understandably concerned about the fate of an already-questioned back line.
When it turned out to be an injury to the same knee he had surgically-repaired in 2012, the fears were even worse.
And with the always-fun news that it had come in a “non-contact situation,” well, oh boy.
Never fear, though. L.A. coach Bruce Arena promises that Gonzalez’s injury is short-term.
“We don’t [have an update],” Arena said following Tuesday’s training session at StubHub Center. “We’re going to talk to the doctors today and find out a little bit more, but I think it’s a very short-term issue and he’s going to be fine.”
Asked if there were fears the injury could cost Gonzalez an opportunity to play in Brazil, Arena was dismissive.
“I strongly doubt that’s going to be the case,” he said. “I feel strongly about the fact this is a short-term issue and he’ll be fine. … There’s nothing long-term with his injury, I can promise you that.”
You don’t have an update but it’s going to be fine? Bruce? Pinkie-swear? Like it or not, Gonzalez is a major piece of the United States defensive fortunes against the likes of Ghana, Portugal, Germany and — hopefully — beyond. Stay tuned to see if Arena likes to break promises.
