Following AS Monaco’s 1-1 draw with Guingamp on Wednesday, Paris Saint-Germain became Ligue 1 champions for the second-straight season.
PSG lead the Ligue 1 standings by seven points with just two games remaining as Monaco slipped up late on against French Cup winners Guingamp, after Dimitar Berbatov had given them a late lead, to hand Les Parisiens the 2013-14 crown.
Upon hearing the news ahead of their match with Rennes later on Wednesday, PSG’s players were all smiles and a carnival atmosphere rippled around the Parc des Princes.
The club from the French capital has now won four championships after being founded in 1970, while French manager Laurent Blanc has guided his expensively-assembled side to glory in his first season in charge.
Success on the European stage alluded PSG once again this campaign — they bowed out Chelsea at the quarterfinal stage — but their wealthy Qatari ownership group will take solace in a second consecutive domestic crown.
With players like Zlatan Ibrahmiovic, Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva and Ezequiel Lavezzi on board after several splurges in the transfer market, PSG were odds on favorites to defend their crown. It took them until the penultimate game of the season to do that, but Paris Saint-Germain are Ligue 1 champions.
