England roster “leaks”: Cole, Carrick, Defoe out of youth-heavy roster

May 11, 2014, 5:18 PM EDT

Ashley Cole‘s England career seems all-but-over, as the Chelsea stalwart and longtime Three Lions player has reportedly been left off Roy Hodgson’s 23-man┬ároster for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

There have been several reports that include leaks for the roster, which is set to come out on Monday.

Cole reportedly rejected a chance to be on the standby list.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Michael Carrick will also miss out on a plane ticket, with Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw getting the call.

More from The Daily Mail:

Without Lampard and Gerrard, the squad has an average age of 25.

The other squad members are Joe Hart, Ben Foster, John Ruddy, Glen Johnson, Gary Cahill, Phil Jagielka, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Leighton Baines, Jordan Henderson, Jack Wilshere, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Daniel Sturridge, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Rickie Lambert.

Some other snubs from the list are Celtic keeper Fraser Forster, Toronto FC forward Jermaine Defoe and Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley. If it’s true, what do you think?

Cole and Defoe can have no complaints. They have both had long England careers in which they have failed to achieve their potential, time to move on.

The only one with a slight beef is Fraser Forster, given that the guys who beat him out are a relegated keeper and one who was one up from the drop. But even that is barely, and neither of those guys is going to play anyway. Just goes to show that the SFPL is going downhill and isn’t respected.

I think it’s pretty much the expected squad, Phil Jones is one, that I think had a subpar season, I believe Stones from Everton is better

No Geordies, that hurts. Thought we could’ve had 2 even 3 this year. Forster and Carroll will be on the plane to Russia in 4 years at least.
