Portugal is going to play the game. They’re not skipping directly to the 23-man roster. Like 2014 World Cup group-mates the United States, they’re taking time to assess a full 30-man roster.
For Paulo Bento, that preliminary squad includes all the names U.S. fans have dwelt on since the groups were drawn for Brazil. Reigning Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo is in, as is Real Madrid teammates Pepe and Fabio Coentrao. Monaco’s Joao Moutinho leads a midfield that features mainstays Miguel Veloso and Raul Meireles, while Nani will be called upon to help Ronaldo up top.
Bento’s expected to name his 23-man team on May 19, with the Seleccao set to play Greece, Mexico and Ireland in the lead-up to Brazil. The final two games will be played in the U.S.: at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. (Mexico); and at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (Ireland).
At its core, this is the same group that took Spain to penalty kicks in the Euro 2012 semifinals. Though the team will be favored to get out of Group G, Portugal will also be the U.S. and Ghana’s main targets in one of the draw’s most competitive groups.
Here’s the full, 30-man squad:
