Robben, Müller extra time goals give Bayern Munich league-cup double

They needed 120 minutes, but thanks to extra time goals from Arjen Robben and Thomas Müller, Bayern Munich has completed its league-cup double. Defeating Bundesliga runners up Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in Berlin, the league champions won their 17th DFB-Pokal, claiming both of Germany’s main domestic honors for the second season in a row.

After a stalemate between the club’s possession game and BVB’s attempts to counter extended into the second period of extra time, Robben converted the opener when a ball from the right found the Dutch international inside the left post. The attacker’s left-footed, 107th minute shot found the feet of Roman Weidenfeller. Without time to prepare himself for the shot, the Dortmund keeper was unable to prevent the Cup-winning goal.

Three minutes into stoppage time, Müller took advantage of a desperate Dortmund, beating Marcel Schmelzer to a ball fed behind the BVB defense by Claudio Pizarro. Going in alone on goal, the German international rounded Weidenfeller to finish into an empty net, sealing his team’s victory.

Highlights of both goals are below, but for Bayern, the win serves as redemption for the 3-0 loss it suffered at home to Dortmund on Apr. 12. It also gives the team another three-trophy season, though this year, the Club World Cup takse the Champions League trophy’s place on the mantle.
