After reportedly chasing him during the January transfer window, Arsenal are said to be back on the trail of Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Morata is top of Arsenal’s summer wishlist and Arsene Wenger is keen to bolster his forward line after winning the FA Cup and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
Morata, 21, has come through the European champions famous academy system and has developed into a rising star of Spanish soccer. However with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria and Gareth Bale in front of him in the pecking order, it’s been extremely difficult for the Spaniard to break through as a regular in the first team.
Could Arsenal’s interest tempt Morata in a move to the Premier League?
Plenty of other big clubs are sniffing around the Spanish U-21 international, as Juventus and Tottenham have also inquired about his services as Real will no doubt spend plenty more cash on their squad this summer after finally winning “La Decima”, their tenth European title, by beating crosstown rivals Atletico in the 2013-14 UCL final.
It will obviously be a wrench for Morata to leave Real but if he wants to progress and play regularly, it seems increasingly likely that he’ll have to move away from the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid don’t want to stand in his way but are keen to insert a buy-back clause in any contract Morata signs so they have first refusal on him should he flourish at the Emirates under Wenger.
Morata scored nine times in 34 appearances for Real this season but has rarely started matches and is often used off the bench. He replaced Benzema in the Champions League final with 10 minutes to go in the match and played the entire extra time period as Real lifted the crown. His style of play is something Arsenal need and would perhaps compliment Olivier Giroud well. Morata is good in the air, can hold up the ball remarkably well and given the chance he can finish with aplomb.
Simply put, if Arsenal inquire and have the chance of snapping up the Spaniard, they should do it.
