That striker with a killer instinct so desired by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho took another step toward Stamford Bridge (while actually at Stamford Bridge, actually).
According to the BBC, Diego Costa has passed his medical with the London club and now will negotiate personal terms with the Blues. Atletico Madrid had a buyout clause of approximately $54 million that Chelsea has reportedly met.
Costa has been linked with Chelsea dating back to April, but had the pesky manner of La Liga and UEFA Champions League runs to deal with first. The striker was bothered by hamstring injuries toward the end of the season and subbed off after only 9 minutes of the Champions League final loss to Real Madrid, but all is apparently well (or well enough).
Costa scored 36 goals in 52 games for Atletico this season as they won their first La Liga title since 1996 and reached the Champions League final.
The Brazil-born forward is in Spain’s World Cup squad.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said in May that the addition of a “killer” strikerwould be a key priority during the summer.
The London club scored 71 goals in the Premier League this season, 31 fewer than champions Manchester City, who finished four points ahead of them.
Costa would be a big signing for Chelsea, who is stout at nearly every other position and should challenge for a Champions League title with improved striker depth. Whether that includes Romelu Lukaku is another matter altogether, but imagine these two up top? Decent.
