Miami played host to a fiery friendly between England and Ecuador on Wednesday, with the clubs drawing 2-2 in a match that was lacking in quality defending.
Liverpool’s Sterling slid into the ankles of Valencia on the sideline deep into the second half, taking the Manchester United player out. Valencia bounced to his feet and grabbed Sterling by the back of the neck, then briefly grasping his neck before walking away in anger.
Red cards were given to both players, though they will not affect the 2014 World Cup.
The game wasn’t light on action for a friendly, and England helped by playing a bizarre defensive set-up that included James Milner at outside back. Ecuador struck first when Enner Valencia leapt between Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling to head his nation into an 8th minute lead.
England plays Saturday against Honduras, likely with a much different lineup.
