Remember when, just a few hours ago, the news was all about how Cameroon were refusing to board their flight to Brazil? The Indomitable Lions were once again in a dispute with their national soccer federation over bonus wages to paid after the World Cup.
While the players had threatened to strike prior to their friendly matches, they instead waited until they were set to leave Yaoundé, and then delayed the plane’s leaving. The players were complaining that the bonus, amounting to roughly $100,000, they were to receive for playing in the tournament was not enough.
The dispute has now been put to rest, however. After an emergency meeting, the players and the federation came to an agreement on a financial package – although no details as to the amount of the package have yet to emerge. The Cameroon squad is now expected to arrive in Brazil on Sunday evening, a mere 12 hours late.
After agreeing an end to the row, the soccer federation president, Joseph Owona, said: “Everything has been resolved. We have opted for transparency. There is no problem and I think the team needs to be mobilised for all to look in one direction.”
Cameroon have been drawn in a difficult group with Croatia and Mexico as well as hosts Brazil, and their first match is scheduled for Friday, June 13. That’s not much time for them to gather their wits back around them and be sure they’re mentally prepared for the tournament. Could this sort of dispute affect the way Group A plays out?
