Queens Park Rangers may have had a wage bill of £68m (~$115m), and posted losses of £65.4m (~$108m) in the 2012-2013 season, but it looks like that’s not going to stop the club from continuing to tempt players by offering high salaries. Rather than worry about the financial state of the club, or fair play rules, QPR look set to offer Rio Ferdinand £80,000 per week (~$135,000).
With Harry Redknapp in charge, is anyone surprised?
Should the offer come, and Ferdinand accept, that would make the 35-year-old the highest paid player at Loftus Road, beating out Loïc Rémy, who currently earns around £75,000 per week. That, and the chance to reunite with Redknapp, who gave him his debut at West Ham in 1996,could tempt Ferdinand to join the recently-promoted side.
You’d think the veteran would be tempted to hang up his boots and retire to a life inside the studio, but the defender insists that’s not so. In his Mail on Sunday column, Ferdinand, who will work for the BBC as an expert at the World Cup in Brazil, said:
I can assure you of one thing, though: I’m not quite ready to join the [Gary] Lineker-[Alan] Shearer retirement club just yet. I see myself as going to Rio very much as an active footballer with playing time ahead of me. I have options on the table from several clubs in England and overseas for next season and I’m intending to play on if the right situation arises. There is, in all honesty, nothing settled yet.
QPR could face some stiff competition. Apparently, Ferdinand has had offers from Premier League clubs Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and West Ham, as well as teams from Major League Soccer, Dubai and China. But would any other side be willing to give a 35-year-old with known injury problems such a steep weekly salary?
