Julian Green dishes his feelings on his World Cup experience, the United States run and plenty of club-related topics in an interview posted Friday on Bayern Munich’s web site.
Here are some highlights from the 19-year-old’s thoughts.
On how the World Cup helped him as a developing player — “The experience has definitely helped me progress. I was able to watch the best players in the world up close, Cristiano Ronaldo for example. His presence on the field, his ambition, his posture. Experiencing that up close was great.”
On Bayern’s upcoming tour of the U.S. — “The trip is something special for me. I love the country, I was born there and I’m always glad to be there. At our game against the MLS All Stars I’ll also meet some of my team-mates from the national team. I’m very much looking forward to the tour.”
On whether he expected to make the 23-man roster — “I wasn’t that surprised. I trained well in camp and the coach and my team-mates always gave me the feeling that I belonged, even though I was the youngest in the squad. I always tried to conduct myself normally and not as the ‘young’ Julian.”
On losing to Belgium and surviving the ‘Group of Death’ — “Of course we’d have loved to win against Belgium, but despite that I look back with pride because no-one other than us expected us to survive a group with Germany, Ghana and Portugal. And the fact that I also got to make an appearance in the knockout round and score a goal means a lot to me.”
There’s plenty more in the interview. It will be interesting to see how often Bayern features the young Green in its tour of the United States, and certainly the boisterous reception he’ll receive from the American Outlaws and other USMNT supporters.
The Bavarians are headed to the States for a two-week tour beginning July 30. Here’s where they’ll be:
July 31 — vs. CD Guadalajara (in New Jersey)
Aug. 6 — vs. MLS All-Stars (in Oregon)
