Reports last night from Manuel Pellegrini’s home country of Chile say the Manchester City manager turned down the chance to take over for Brazil.
The reigning Premier League champion flat-out told the CBF no, according to Chile’s El Mercurio.
Luiz Felipe Scolari’s resignation after the World Cup debacle has created an opening the CBF clearly wishes to fill as soon as possible, and they’re aiming high.
Pellegrini has two years remaining on the three-year deal he signed when taking over of the Sky Blues last summer. His first season at the Etihad was a smashing success, with new signings sparking the club to its second title in three years.
According to the report, Pellegrini told the CBF “no” before they could even begin to discuss money.
The anonymous source in the El Mercurio report said Pellegrini’s main concern was it was “more of a long-term project” than the club he is currently with. Seeing as how Brazil crashed out of the World Cup with a disastrous and historic 7-1 loss to Germany, that’s an understatement.
The source said the federation is looking for someone who will “be someone to change the mentality and modus operandi of the players.” The source also said they are not afraid to look abroad, because limiting themselves to their home country would be “a fool’s paradigm” because “what we need are results.”
