Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid finally have their punishments from the 2014 UEFA Champions League final, and it’s going to cost some big names some game time.

Atleti manager Diego Simeone and Real midfielder Xabi Alonso are suspended from their next European match, which for Simeone won’t occur until the Champions League group stage. Alonso will miss a UEFA Super Cup match against Sevilla.

Simeone and Alonso were charged in late May. Both teams were also fined for fan conduct.

From the Associated Press:

Simeone went on to the pitch twice during extra time of his team’s 4-1 loss in May, and confronted a Real player who kicked a ball toward the Atletico dugout after the last goal. Alonso, who missed the final for receiving three yellow cards during the competition, sprinted down the touchline after the final whistle.

During an often physical match, seven Atletico players and five from Real were booked. For improper conduct by their players and for fans setting off fireworks, Atletico has been fined 21,000 euros ($28,400), and Real 18,000 euros ($24,300).

Simeone’s suspension is understandable, but UEFA is taking a hardline on Alonso. So he’s allowed to watch the game but not to celebrate after it? Please.

Xabi Alonso is suspended for the UEFA Super Cup match vs. Sevilla, not the first Champions League game.

A whole 21000 and 18000 euros? Wow. However, will these teams recover from such a devastating fine? This will surely cause both Madrid teams to really act!
