Manchester City have been dealt a huge blow heading into the new season.
Spanish striker Alvaro Negredo will be out for up to three months after fracturing the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.
Negredo, 28, broke the bone in his foot in Man City’s 2-1 friendly win over Scottish side Hearts on Friday. Negredo limped off just before half time and will now be out of action until at least November.
The man known around the Etihad as ‘The Beast’ posted a short message to City’s fans on his Instagram account, complete with a picture of his right foot in the dreaded plastic boot, as he aims to come back stronger despite missing a large chunk of the 2014-15 Premier League season.
“I want to let you know that its going to be hard for the next few months, I fractured my 5th metatarsal and will be out a few months. I will be back stronger than ever.”
Negredo banged in 26 goals for City in his debut season at the Etihad last year following his move from Sevilla. The striker was red-hot early on in the campaign, as all 26 came before January 11. Then he suffered a massive drought in front of goal, with the powerful forward going 16 games without scoring to close out the season. That barren spell ultimately cost Negredo a spot on the Spanish national team roster for the World Cup and now this injury has come at a time when some reports had him linked with a move away from the Citizens.
Now City’s manager Manuel Pellegrini will have to think about potentially replacing Negredo, as he has Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero up top. Pellegrini will likely refrain from buying another forward over the summer, as Stevan Jovetic and John Guidetti could stake their claim to become regulars.
Anyone who has broken a metatarsal (unfortunately I have past experience with this) can tell you that it is a long road to recovery and stepping up the rehab too early can cause plenty more damage. Get well soon, Alvaro.
