Cristiano Ronaldo is locked in a legal battle with a man from Rhode Island who has the same initials as him.
Christopher Renzi, a 43-year-old fitness enthusiast, claims that he has owned the patent for “CR7″ in the U.S. since 2009 after receiving a letter from Danish company JBS Textile Group who demand he should give up the trademark as Ronaldo is about to bring his “CR7″ underwear line to America.
Hmm, this is interesting.
Renzi currently uses CR7 on shirts and jeans as it stands for his initials and the day he was born, Oct. 7. It seems pretty harmless, right?
Well the Danish firm JBS is taking Renzi to court and the American is fighting them tooth and nail to own the trademark in the U.S.
Renzi’s attorney, Michael Feldhun, has the following to say as he accepted Ronaldo is a more famous user of CR7 “but it’s really based on who’s using it first. We can show we were the first use of the CR7 name in commerce in America. They don’t really have the trademark rights because they haven’t used it.”
While Ronaldo’s reps believe that Renzi is benefiting from using CR7 as the moniker is “so closely tied to the fame and reputation of Cristiano Ronaldo, that a connection with the soccer player would immediately be presumed by the general public when encountering.”
Let’s see how this one pans out, as Ronaldo’s new underwear range could hit a snag in the USA…
