Reports: Frank Lampard likely to take a short-term loan at Manchester City

Major League Soccer signed Frank Lampard, and are reportedly getting ready to loan him out to the Premier League champions.

Yep, you read that right.

Multiple reports say at 36 years old, the longtime Chelsea midfielder and recently unveiled New York City FC designated player will head north to the Etihad and play for Manchester City as he keeps fit ahead of the 2015 MLS season.

According to a report in The Guardian, Queens Park Rangers “lead the chase” (whatever that means) but that Lampard heavily favors a move to City instead.

That would mean after spending 13 seasons at Chelsea, Lampard would don a lighter shade of blue and likely face his former club twice before the Major League Soccer season begins next March.

City has part ownership in New York City FC, and reports suggest Lampard rejected a move to City’s other subsidiary in Melbourne, Australia where NYCFC teammate David Villa is loaned out to. Earlier today, many betting outlets cut the odds of Lampard’s move to City drastically.

The move makes sense for both sides. With Manchester City suffering Financial Fair Play sanctions that affects the makeup of its Champions League roster, City would add a cheap English player to their largely foreign roster.

According to The Mirror, Lampard visited Manchester City’s training complex in late May ahead of the transfer to NYCFC.

Manchester City are in the United States, but according to the Guardian report, Lampard would likely join them in time for training ahead of the Community Shield against Arsenal.
