Chelsea beat Hungarian side Ferencvaros 2-1 in a friendly on Sunday, but the Blues didn’t come out of the game in Budapest unscathed.
Veteran forward Didier Drogba, making his first start for Chelsea after his surprise arrival back at Stamford Bridge for a second stint this summer, injured his ankle in the first half and could be a doubt for Chelsea’s Premier League opener at Burnley next Monday.

Depending on how serious this injury was, Jose Mourinho may look to make a move in the transfer window to give the Blues more options up top between now and September 2. Drogba landed awkwardly on his ankle and received treatment on the pitch. He then tried to run the injury off but limped off the pitch after just 28 minutes. The match was Chelsea’s second in three days after they played Fenerbache and Besiktas in two 45 minutes matches in Turkey on Friday.
With only Diego Costa and Fernando Torres as Chelsea’s other recognizes strikers, many believe Mourinho should be on the hunt for another striker. Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o and Romelu Lukaku have all left Stamford Bridge this summer and 36-year-old Drogba has arrived.
For Chelsea to succeed in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and the domestic cups, they can’t afford to be playing the same players two to three teams a week. Getting Drogba back on board made sense as Mourinho plans to have him become part of his coaching staff, however the Ivorian forward has a key role to play in reliving the burden on Costa and Torres whenever possible, by coming off the bench.
In the game on Sunday, Chelsea trailed Ferencvaros but fought back in the second half as Ramires equalized then Cesc Fabregas grabbed the winner late on with a fine individual goal. The Blues face Real Sociedad on Tuesday in their final preseason game before the start of the 2014-15 PL season.
Mourinho will be hoping his players stay healthy ahead of a huge season for the West Londoners.
