Manchester United’s Luke Shaw warns rivals: “We want to win the Premier League”

Luke Shaw is only 19 and is about to enter his first season as a Manchester United player. That doesn’t mean he is just going to bed himself in quietly with the Red Devils. Oh no.

[EXCLUSIVE: Shaw on United move]

The former Southampton left back, who became the most expensive teenager in the world this summer when he moved to United for over $55 million, has fired a warning shot to the rest of the Premier League.

Speaking to MUTV, Shaw spoke of his dream of playing at Old Trafford. He also discussed the teams aim to win the PL title this season.

“As a kid, it’s a dream to play at Old Trafford,” Shaw said. “It’s one of the biggest arenas in the world, you would say. To know it’s going to be my home ground is something special. I can’t wait to get my first touch on the pitch just to relish it… You have got to be positive and, for me personally, I have come here to win trophies,” he asserted. “It is something everyone wants, not just me. Everyone in that dressing-room is looking to do it.

“We want to win the Premier League. Obviously there is no Champions League for us this season so the main focus is on the Premier League and we all cannot wait to get started.”

England international Shaw has been publicly criticized by United’s new boss Louis van Gaal during preseason regarding his fitness. However after several sessions spent on his own and a few games adapting to playing out of position in a left wing-back role in LGV’s new 3-5-2 formation, Shaw is settling in.

The new-look Red Devils don’t have UEFA Champions League soccer to distract them this term and van Gaal will have plenty of time to bed in his new philosophy on the training ground during the week. Many, including myself, believe United will surge back into the top four and once again become a title contender.

However if that doesn’t happen, Shaw’s words may have a hollow ring to them in the not so distant future. What is he supposed to say though? ‘We don’t want to win the league, a top four finish would be lovely…’ It would. However if van Gaal really wants to get the fans and the board on his side from year-one, silverware is key this season. From seeing the Red Devils in action during preseason and their impressive displays to win the International Champions Cup, things are moving in the right direction rapidly.

United are a work in progress but their aim is clear: past glories need to become a reality this season.
