Crystal Palace boss Tony Pulis quit his job on Thursday, just before the Premier League start, and the club’s jolted management has quickly turned its attention toward finding a replacement.
The Telegraph reported that Palace will interview Tim Sherwood “early next week”, along with former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay. Both men are the Eagles’ top candidates, and the club is looking to move forward with the hiring as soon as possible. Palace plans to sign a couple of players by the end of the month, so they want a manager in office days before the transfer window’s conclusion.
Sherwood, who rejected the opportunity to manage at West Brom this summer, left Tottenham Hotspur in May after they signed him to an 18-month contract in December 2013.
Meanwhile, players and staff alike had no inkling Pulis would exit at this point in time, but in the past, similar scenarios have plagued the Eagles. Above all, assistant manager Matt Millen doesn’t want his players to feel that they had triggered this baffling situation.
“The players are asking why. This has happened now three times what with Dougie [Freedman] leaving and then Ian [Holloway] and now Tony,” he said. “It’s important to reassure them they’ve done nothing wrong…Now all of a sudden they’re wondering who is going to come in and what direction we’re going.”
