The Premier League often brings about fierce competition for the league title with a select group of teams, and as the season progresses, some may fall out of that mix. Others rise to the top. And some stay exactly where they were predicted to stand.
For Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, he expects his squad to exist at the top of the table most of the time, but if any side, other than City, is to snag first place, the Argentine believes it will be Manchester United. He implied that Chelsea and Arsenal were contenders as well, not at the United’s rank, however.
With David Moyes fired and a more accomplished Louis van Gaal now leading the charge, the Red Devils seem in great position to bounce back.
“This year I think Manchester United will be up there challenging us,” he said, through Goal.com, at the club’s City Live event Thursday, Goal.com. “Then you have teams like Chelsea and Arsenal who, as always, will be there or thereabouts battling with us for the league.”
United finished in seventh place last season–underperforming for the English giants. Nonetheless, they’re low finish at the end of their 2013-14 campaign actually signifies an easy future schedule-wise. United can only focus on winning the league because they won’t have to worry about playing in the Europa League or Champions League.
Both leagues require substantial preparation and add contests that can really pack a club’s schedule at times, taking a toll the team’s fitness levels.
“The team I think who is most worthy of having the best chance to threaten is United, because they are not involved in any other competitions other than the English knockout cups and the league,” Aguero said.
“That means they’ll get more rest between games than ourselves and some of the other teams and that will work in their favor, like it did last season with Liverpool.”
There’s still 15 days left in the summer transfer window, so one couldn’t make a clear-cut decision on the No.2 favorite behind City, but if United sign Angel Di Maria, whose transfer fee is a steep 50 million pounds, the outlook of their chances could definitely increase.
