In the latest edition of Premier League Download, NBC Sports’ Premier League studio host Rebecca Lowe recently caught up with Gerrard and the Liverpool legend gave an incredibly open, insightful and at times emotional assessment of the Reds’ 2013-14 campaign as they came so close to winning it all but faltered right at the end of the season. Gerrard was at the center of that dramatic collapse.

Below are a few snippets from the interview with the former England captain, which you can see live in full from 7 a.m. ET on Sunday morning on NBCSN before Liverpool take on Southampton at 8:30 a.m. ET in their season opener from Anfield.

On the one feeling taken away from Liverpool’s 2013-14 season…

“Missed opportunity. We came so close to achieving a dream. Certainly for myself, personally, and everyone connected with the club. We were on a wave, an unbelievable journey and we were so close to getting what we haven’t had for an awful long time. It will be looking back with a few regrets and certainly a missed opportunity.”

On if Liverpool’s collapse at the end of last season was more poignant as he’s 34, not 24…

“Yeah. I think it’s more cruel. Because to come so close at 24 you probably still have 10 years to try and achieve that dream. It is the only prize that eludes me at the moment in my career and as each year goes by I want it more because I am running out of time. From a personal point of view that moment was very cruel. I am not naive enough, or too hard on myself to blame myself. You win a league over 38 games, not one game. I’m talking about the Chelsea moment. It was a very painful end to a wonderful season.”

On being back in the Champions League…

“When you watch the Champions League, as a player, and you’re not involved, there’s an envy. You’re watching others play on the big stage and you hear the Champions League  music. Competing against the best players in Europe. It is a competition that as a footballer, it is the number one competition to play in.”

On the downside of career, still a good player, but will probably retire without a PL Title, as I don’t see Liverpool winning it, in the next couple of seasons, probably his last, Liverpool fans will disagree, but You support your home teams, no other way, than to believe in them, they blew golden chance last season, I think Gerrard will regret, that failed opportunity in retirement
