Two fans who perished in the downed Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 were remembered before the Newcastle United opener at St. James’ Park, and it did the pair proud.
Both Manchester City and Newcastle were involved in the remembrance as players brought flowers out into the middle of the pitch before the game.
In another classy move, the public address announcer also recognized bitter Toon rivals Sunderland for being a stand-up club and neighbor in Newcastle’s time of mourning. Those pair of supporters strongly despise each other, and therefore the recognition of one rival by another for being so supportive is an outstandingly classy sign of respect.
Supporters then, in the 17th minute, gave a minute’s applause in remembrance of not just the pair of fans, but the entire downed flight.
Two supporters Liam Sweeney and John Adler were traveling to see Newcastle play in New Zealand during its preseason tour of the Oceanic country when their flight was downed by rebels in eastern Ukraine.
Fans also applauded during the 28th and 63rd minute to recognize the ages of the two men.
