Thomas Muller reveals he rejected “astronomical” offer from Manchester United

It seems as though even Manchester United’s endless pot of money is failing to attract new players these days.

German World Cup winner and top scorer Thomas Muller has revealed the Red Devils offered him “astronomical” wages to sign for them this summer, but the Bayern Munich forward turned them down.

In an interview with German outlet Bild, Muller, 24, revealed that he had plenty of offers from overseas this summer and United were top of the list.

However Germany’s clinical finisher, who has scored 10 goals in 12 World Cup games over the past two tournaments including five in Brazil this summer, revealed that he was happy at Bayern.

Speaking about United’s offer, this is what Muller had to say.

“Of course. I was aware that I could earn more by making that transfer. The amount that foreign clubs were offering me was astronomical. But Bayern are my club, a change was not an issue for me.”

Louis van Gaal has yet to stamp his own mark on United and with less than two weeks until the transfer window slams shuts only Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw (both deals agree before van Gaal took over) have arrived. Argentine defender Marcos Rojo is set to complete his move to United in the coming hours, but plenty more players are needed if LVG is to quick-start the most successful club in English history.

Hearing players like Muller publicly come out and reveal that they don’t want to join United simply for financial reasons is refreshing, yet also points to the Red Devils’ dwindling status as a world soccer power. Another below-par season in the Premier League this campaign could see them slip further down the pecking order among the world’s elite clubs. Recently former manager David Moyes revealed the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo all turned down moves to United last summer and that same reluctance to sign on at Old Trafford this year has led to a frustrating period for van Gaal and Executive Chairman Ed Woodward.

Sadly, for them, Muller’s comments aren’t that surprising. The riches of the Red Devils’ aren’t enough to entice players.
