It’s been a horrible time for Ukraine and its powerful club, Shakhtar Donetsk. Now, the club is reeling after two ‘powerful explosions’ rocked their home stadium.

According to Shakhtar’s press release, there are no casualties amongst the stadium staff. The club was due to face Obolon-Brovar in the Ukrainian Cup’s Round of 32 later today.

Several players had refused to play for Shakhtar, and one even transferred away from the club.

From Shakhtar Donetsk:

On 23 August, at 6:00, two powerful explosions occurred at Donbass Arena. As a result of shelling, there are numerous damages of the northwestern facade of the stadium, communications, equipment and detached building of the energy centre, which is located in the northern part of the Donbass Arena park.

There are no casualties among the stadium staff.

More to come…

the most important thing, that you managed to not mention, is that Shakhtar haven’t even been playing in Donetsk this season, BECAUSE of the fighting. They have been playing in Lviv, some 750 miles away on the Polish border.

Also the “players leaving the club” thing is being highly overplayed.

      Did players leave the club?

Yes, but no more than do at the end of a season normally. Shakhtar have a massive team and youth system that loan several dozen players per year to lower teams.

As you mentioned, Ferreyra left. Others refused to return and play matches in Donetsk, but that’s before they moved across the country. Other players left the club but were planning on it anyway: Eduardo, Tomas Hübschman.

I do think that a few players would take the chance to leave the club if they could. However those players would, again, leave anyway. Bernard, Fernando, Douglas Costa, Alex Teixeira, Dentinho, and Wellington Nem could all move to higher leagues such as the PL, La Liga, Serie A.
