Reports out of London suggest that Chelsea striker Diego Costa has suffered a hamstring injury that could keep him out of the side for four to six weeks.
The report first emerged via Sun Sport and has since been picked up by the more reliable Telegraph. The injury reportedly happened in training on Wednesday yet despite the prognosis the striker is said not to be giving up hope of playing in Saturday’s match at Everton.
Since arriving from Atletico Madrid on a $46 million transfer this summer Costa has assimilated well to life in the Premier League, scoring in each of his side’s opening matches. With a combination size, power and lethal finishing ability, Costa is the perfect striker for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Losing the man who scored 36 goals in all competitions at Atletico last season would be a heavy blow to the Blues. Seemingly content to rely on a roster of forwards that included Costa, Didier Drogba and Andre Schurrle, it was believed that Mourinho could be sending Fernando Torres to AC Milan. Now, however, if fears are confirmed and Costa is lost for an extended period of time, any transfer for the Spaniard could be jeopardized.
There chance also exists that Costa’s injury prompts Mourinho to bring in another striker before the transfer window closes on September 1st. With Monaco’s Radamel Falcao still rumored to be available and PSG’s Edinson Cavani also on the trading block, one more big move could be in the cards at Stamford Bridge before week’s end.
