United States international Geoff Cameron suffered an apparent injury today while playing in Stoke City’s 3-0 win over Portsmouth in the League Cup.
The extent and specifics surrounding the injury have not been released but will nevertheless call into question the viability of Cameron being sold to a new club before the transfer window closes on September 1st.
After starting in the holding midfield role alongside Charlie Adam, Cameron exited the pitch in the 37th minute and immediately went down the tunnel to see the physio.
The 29-year-old has yet to feature in a Premier League match amidst rampant speculation that he could be transferred with a host of Premier League and Serie A sides interested.
Stoke City, however, are reluctant to sell the versatile Cameron, who can play as a right-back, center-back and center midfielder. In his first two seasons with the Potters, Cameron made the right-back spot his own but this season it appears that manager Mark Hughes prefers Phil Bardsley, who was acquired from Sunderland over the summer.
Lazio is the club reported to be most interested in the American’s services but the recent injury casts doubt on the likelihood of a transfer. If significant, the injury could be enough to turn off the Romans and provide just the excuse that Stoke are looking for to hold onto their man.
Cameron’s injury also threatens his place in the September 3rd US Men’s National Team match against the Czech Republic in Prague.
