Newcastle United 3-3 Crystal Palace: Zaha hands Warnock dream comeback (video)

Aug 30, 2014, 11:57 AM EDT

Mike Williamson clumsily-put home a rebound in the 89th minute, but Newcastle could not survive seven minutes of stoppage time, as Wilfried Zaha scored in the fifth minute of added time to gift Neil Warnock a point in his debut as Crystal Palace manager.

Rolando Aarons and Daryl Janmaat also scored for the Magpies in the 3-3 draw, who twice came back from deficits in the match.

Dwight Gayle scored in the first minute for Crystal Palace, which also got a tally from Jason Puncheon.

Palace moves out of the basement with its first point of the year, while Newcastle now has two points through three games.

After Tim Krul pushed a hard shot off the goal post, Gayle walked past a dumbfounded Newcastle defense to blast the rebound into the frame. The game had only seen 30 seconds of play and Crystal Palace was up 1-0.

Aside from that massive moment, the first half was mostly Newcastle. That might sate some fans, but the fact remains that the last ball wasn’t there (just as it was against Man City and Aston Villa).

But crosses and corners were all gobbled up by Palace keeper Julian Speroni, as Newcastle’s service was lacking.

A nice counter to a rare bit of Palace pressure saw Moussa Sissoko rip a shot just wide of goal off a lay-off from Siem de Jong in the 34th minute.

With finesse failing them, the Magpies decided to bully their way to a goal, as Janmaat, de Jong and Emmanuel Riviere combined to ride through the box to an equalizer in the 37th minute. Janmaat got the goal.

It was 1-1 at the half, and Squawka brought us a legit fun stat:

Despite holding 67 percent of possession in the first half, the Magpies again conceded in the 48th minute, as Jason Puncheon half-volleyed home a shot that Krul would love another crack at… not pretty.

Palace nearly made it 3-1 when Mike Williamson allowed Martin Kelly to dribble to the center of the pitch, but Krul dove to slap the ball wide.

Aarons found the equalizer when Janmaat flicked a corner back post, and the new boy had his first Premier League goal.

The 18-year-old Jamaican almost headed a second home minutes later, and curled an 85th minute shot wide of the bar that looked destined for goal.
